Water leaks
1/21/2010 3:58:58 PM

It is advisable to now how to turn off your main stopcock before you ahve a leak.
In most houses it will be located under the sink or in a cupboard on the outside  wall of your house . If it is difficult to find then it could be in a downstairs bathroom or toilet.  It may be that the stopcock is impossible to turn off or very stiff.. In this situation it is worth knowing how to turn off your mains supply from outside your home. There will be an access plate on the perimeter of your house, usually on the pavement outside your main entrance  or in your driveway. Newer properties will have a simple 1/4 turn gate valve at the bottom of the acces hole to the stopcock. In older houses that haven't been converted to the newer valves, you may need a special long reach tool to tun of the water. Check it out before there is a problem

Dripping overflow pipe
1/13/2010 2:45:26 PM

The overflow pipe that you can see on the side of your house will come from the cold water tank or your expansion tank  for the central heating system. If the is a steady drip this will almost certainly be caused by a leaking seal of the ball valve controling the coldwater feed to your tank.. Usually it is advisable to change over the complete ball valve assembly ( under £10) rather than replace the seal, unless the valve looke new. This will also replace any other parts that may be wearing.. I recently was called to a house where there was a steady flow from the overlow. On investigation this was caused by the ball float detaching from the valve arm. In this case the "brass" arm had sheared/corroded at the screw thread that held the float..

Tree pruning
10/28/2009 9:45:44 AM

Tall or out of place trees need occassional pruning. I use a Stihl pole pruner that can reach 12 ft and prune branches of 6 inches diameter. This is far better and safer than climbing the tree.

Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms
10/8/2009 10:19:07 AM

It  is recommended that all houses be fitted with sufficient  smoke alarms.  Any house with gas appliances should also have  carbon monoxide alarms    fitted for safety these alarms are relatively easy to fit although the recommended positions sometimes   high on a wall  or ceiling  means that handyman may need to be called in

Sheds and greenhouses
10/8/2009 10:15:56 AM

sheds and greenhouses need to be sited on firm footings.  these are usually concrete or brick foundations.  Sometimes greenhouses are supplied with the a metal frame base that serves the job of foundations.   it is important  that the foundations are level as any irregularities will   deform the  shape of the  shed all greenhouse.

Bathroom design and fitting.
10/8/2009 10:12:16 AM

Anyone who has asked for a quote from a major bathroom fit out company will know the great expenses involved. An alternative is to bring in the separate trades yourself. This would involve employing a plumber to route pipes and connect the bath and sink etc.. However this must be done at the right time, after the wall is all prepared, old tiles removed, plaster made good, etc. this is the job of the tiler who needs to be there before and after the plumber. Usually the tiler will fit a ceramic floor that may not fit any other finishes. The third alternative is to bring in a professional handyman who has good basic plumbing skills and experience of timing he will also go to fit shelves, light fittings etc. and complete the job in one go managing his time and the different jobs according .

Flat-pack furniture
10/8/2009 10:11:15 AM

Sometimes instructions that come with flat pack furniture don't seem to help it all. Rather than waste time on working it out from scratch just called in a professional to finish the job for you

Repairing or replacing ball valves
10/8/2009 10:05:41 AM

Ball or float valves are used in toilet cisterns and water tanks to regulate the level water. Over time the diaphragms and seals inside the valve begin to let through water. This results in the constant hissing from the water tank or cistern and a steady drip coming from the overflow pipes outside the house. This is not usually a dangerous problem as the overflow pipes have been designed for this eventuality. In many cases be valve can be repaired with new seals and diaphragms, however, the low cost of the ball valve can make it more economical to just replace the complete valve, particularly if the ball valve looks old. In addition to traditional brass valves there are plastic versions made the same sort of design and also new designs of float valves that are far more compact and in some cases silent

Putting up shelves
10/8/2009 10:04:40 AM

Once you've selected the correct position for the shelf you should mark its position or the position of the brackets holding up the shelf. Once the drill holes are marked (It is better to measure twice and drill once) they can be drilled with the correct size carbide tipped drill. It is advisable to catch the concrete or brick dust with a dustpan or damp cloth.

Plumbing in
10/8/2009 10:03:42 AM

It is usually a straightforward task to plumb in in a dishwasher washing machine.
Usually the biggest issue is to make certain that the services are available at the correct place. This may involve running extra piping for the waste, and extending the hot and/or cold water pipes. Usually it is advisable to fit a one-way check valve to the water pipes and paid removal of the filler pipes at a later date .

Patio cleaning
10/8/2009 10:02:29 AM
Over time, and over winter in particular, patios and drives can get very dirty

Using the correct equipment patios and drives can be cleaned to near new condition. Using a higher power pressure washer and the correct attachments a professional handyman can remove leads, sweep up the bulk of the third and then clean the surface of the patio or drive. Brick pavours, concrete and paving slabs are easy to clean. However a gravel drive is best managed with with weed killers and hoes and then given a finishing rake.

High Hedge trimming
9/29/2009 9:50:36 AM

Most low hedges can be a DIY job. However, High hedges can be dangerous to cut. A professional Gardener may have a long-reach hedge cutter. I use a Stihl extendable  cutter that can reach the top of 10 ft hedges from the ground. The  main problem is then disposal ofd the cuttings. Ask your gardener for a price to cut the hedge and then a price for disposal. You could save yourself a bit if you do the removal yourselves

Dripping Taps
9/29/2009 9:50:36 AM

Dripping taps are easy to fix. There are a number of seals and washers in the tap body that are designed to keep the water inside. The tap washer is usually the main cause of all leaks from the tap causing the dripping tap problem. Unfortuantey there are dozens of different washers designed for different taps. Most good Pumbers will have a selection of these washers, which will mean that they don't have to "go out" for a part and charge you the time.
